The Case for the Stewardship of God's Creation

Banes S. Lal

God's creation

In a world increasingly marred by the ominous echoes of biblical proportions – violent storms, epic floods, plagues, and the spectre of resource scarcity – climate change emerges as a global challenge that transcends political and geographical boundaries. Yet, it remains entangled in the web of divisive discourse, particularly within the Christian community. The paradoxical reluctance to acknowledge climate change as a critical issue persists, fueled by misinformation and the misconception that it is a realm reserved for liberal politics.

Our planet's predicament, however, surpasses political affiliations. It is a matter that reverberates across the diverse tapestry of humanity, even within the Christian fold. The faithful find themselves tangled in a net of conflicting perspectives, grappling with the enormity of climate change and its implications. Misinformation, a formidable adversary, has clouded the judgment of many, perpetuating a cycle of confusion that hampers a unified response to this pressing matter.

In the ensuing exploration, we embark on a journey to unravel the threads of discord within the Christian community regarding climate change. Through the lens of biblical scriptures, we seek a path that harmonizes with our faith, shedding light on how believers can responsibly navigate the complexities of this challenge.

Before delving into the heart of the matter, it's crucial to establish a stance: this is not a call for disruptive protests, societal upheavals, or the blind embrace of radical media narratives. Instead, this discussion stems from a fundamental question: if we, as believers, champion the responsible stewardship of God's resources, should this principle not extend to our custodianship of the environment?

Join me as we navigate the intersection of faith and environmental responsibility, peeling back the layers of misconception and misinformation to reveal a path forward that aligns with the wisdom embedded in our sacred scriptures.

Stewardship of God's Money

In the beginning God created the heavens and earth

Let's begin with how the Bible emphasizes the importance of responsibility for the resources and wealth that God has entrusted us. In the parable of the talents, found in Matthew 25:14-30 (KJV), Jesus tells a story of a master who expects his servants to wisely manage the talents (money or resources) he gave them. This underscores the importance of financial responsibility and prudent management of God's provisions.

Stewardship of the Environment

The principle of stewardship isn't limited to finances. Genesis 1:28 (KJV) says, "And God blessed them, and God said unto them, 'Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth." Here, God granted humanity dominion over the earth, which implies a responsibility to care for and responsibly manage the natural world.

The Bible also highlights the responsibility of humans to care for God's creation. Genesis 2:15 (KJV) reinforces this by stating, "And the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it." This verse displays God's intention for humans to care for and nurture the earth, a form of environmental stewardship.

Caring for God's Creation

The Bible repeatedly acknowledges God's ownership of the earth. Psalm 24:1 (KJV) affirms, "The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein." This verse also underlines the proposition that we are merely caretakers of God's creation, and our role is to protect and preserve it. The call is for thoughtful, conscientious actions reflecting a genuine commitment to caring for God's creation as faithful stewards, ambassadors, and representatives on earth. He expects responsible management of all that He has entrusted to us, not exploit it.

Acknowledging the Realities of Climate Change

To begin with, acknowledging the realities of climate change is necessary for Christians, aligning with the responsibility as stewards of God's creation, as mentioned in Genesis 2:15. Denial or disbelief in the face of overwhelming scientific evidence of climate change contradicts this biblical mandate to stewardship.

The Impact of Fake Climate News

Unfortunately, the rise of misinformation and fake climate news has created confusion and skepticism among many. As Christians, it's crucial to discern credible sources of information and seek scientific evidence and, as always, truth rooted in biblical principles. Proverbs 14:15 reminds us, "The simple believes every word, But the prudent considers well his steps." We have to be prudent in our beliefs, especially when it concerns the well-being of our temporary home.

Taking a Responsible Approach

For Christians, taking a responsible approach to climate change involves:

  • Acknowledging its reality.

  • Educating oneself with credible information and biblical truths.

  • Integrating responsible environmental practices into daily life.

  • Taking small steps

As Christians, we must embrace our role as stewards of God's creation, acting in harmony with biblical teachings and educating ourselves. Rejecting fake climate news and embracing responsible environmental stewardship is an act of obedience to God and a demonstration of love and compassion.

As we navigate the complexities of this modern challenge, let us do so with faith, guided by the wisdom embedded in God's Word.
