The life of one person

man with dog.jpg

And when He stepped out on the land, there met Him a certain man from the city who had demons for a long time. And he wore no clothes, nor did he live in a house but in the tombs.

When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before Him, and with a loud voice said, "What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me!"

For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had often seized him, and he was kept under guard, bound with chains and shackles; and he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the wilderness.

Jesus asked him, saying, "What is your name?" "And he said, "Legion," (simply has the meaning of many) because many demons had entered him.

And they begged Him that He would not command them to go out into the abyss.

Now a herd of many swine was feeding there on the mountain. So they begged Him that He would permit them to enter them. And He permitted them.

Then the demons went out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the lake and drowned. - Luke 8:27-33

I want to share this story with you. These passages speak of Jesus' encounter with a man possessed of demons. The demons recognize Jesus immediately and his power plus authority to command them. The demons also understood that judgment was upon them and begged Jesus not to torture them, not to send them into the abyss (bottomless pit). They appeared to be terrified of hell and eternal judgement. They preferred to remain in the bodies of living things than go to the place of punishment. If they were not allowed to remain in the man's body, they would instead enter the bodies of animals, even pigs. Jesus granted their request, but they met their judgment nevertheless, for the pigs went mad and drowned in the sea. By sending the demons into the pigs, Jesus gave dramatic visible proof of his power over demons. At the same time, he showed to all the extensive number of demons that had possessed the man.

To Jesus, one person's life was more important than the lives of a thousand pigs.

But when you look at society today, you ask someone, "well, are you scared of going to hell"? There's a lack of fear in most peoples' hearts. In fact, I've heard people say it's going to be a party in hell. So tell me, if the demons are afraid of hell, why aren't you

Jesus has power over the storm; his words have power over Satan and his hordes. Jesus' presence, power, and words judge and destroy the work of Satan that kept this man in bondage and on the edge of death. Jesus gives the man back himself as he drives away the evil by his command.

The forgiveness of sin and the gift of eternal life is waiting for you. All you need to do is ask him!
