Life is a journey filled with ups and downs, trials and triumphs, including moments of joy and sorrow. In these times of uncertainty, the Apostle Paul's words in Romans 12:12 shine as a guiding light, offering us a blueprint for navigating the challenges that come our way. Let's delve into this verse and its surrounding context to draw strength, encouragement, and wisdom for our daily walk with God.

 

Rejoicing in Hope:

As we journey through life, we are often faced with situations that seem overwhelming. Amid these trials, Paul reminds us to be joyful in hope. Our hope is anchored in Christ's promises and the assurance that God is sovereign over all circumstances. Remember the words of Jeremiah 29:11, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope."

In moments of darkness, fix your eyes on the hope that Christ offers – a hope that does not disappoint (Romans 5:5). You can find rest in God when you put your hope in Him and not anything else - "My soul, wait silently for God alone, For my expectation is from Him" Psalm 62:5.

 

Patient in Tribulation:

We don't like this one, do we? And while we might not like it, we shouldn't be surprised by it. When Christians experience affliction, they shouldn't be surprised. After all, we serve a king who faced more than his fair share. Jesus promised that we would face troubles in this world. But we can take heart because he has already overcome them. 

 

Afflictions, hardships, and challenges are part of our human experience. However, Paul encourages us to be patient in affliction. Just as Job endured trials with steadfastness and unwavering faith, we too can draw strength from God's promise that He will never leave us nor forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6). In James 1:2-4, we are reminded that trials produce perseverance, leading to maturity in our faith. Through every trial, we have an opportunity to grow and deepen our reliance on God.

 

Continuing Steadfastly in Prayer:

Pay close attention to how this verse progresses from hope through perseverance to prayer. When we are going through life's challenges, prayer is our greatest resource. Amidst the highs and lows, we are called to remain faithful in prayer. Prayer is our direct line of communication with our Heavenly Father. In 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, we're instructed to "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." Prayer not only brings us closer to God but also brings us peace that transcends understanding "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7. Prayer should be of the highest priority for every believer. Let us remember the faithfulness of God in the past as we present our current needs before Him.

 

So don't lose sight; when the storms of life hit, it's quite simple to turn our attention away from Jesus. But that is the absolute last thing we should do. We must keep our focus on Jesus and constantly remind ourselves of the truth. Similar to Peter's fear of walking on water during a storm. He stayed above the waves as long as he focused on Jesus. He plummeted when he began to concentrate on the wind and waves.

 

Remember that God's Word is a source of comfort and guidance. Our journey is not walked alone but in the presence of our loving Saviour, who understands our struggles and walks alongside us. As you rejoice in hope, remain patient in tribulation, and continue steadfastly in prayer, you will find yourself drawing closer to God and experiencing His comfort, strength, and peace.
