Psalm
3:6
I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people Who have set themselves against me all around.
- BsL
There was a time in King David's life when a great number of his adversaries surrounded him. His predicament grew more complicated as threats were coming from all directions. When David saw the immense crises around him, his heart plummeted. David was afraid of what was to come. But after some reflection, he wisely turned from his immediate circumstances, to fixing his eyes on the Lord.
He turned his gaze away from the evils, adversaries, and difficulties surrounding him. He acknowledged that God is his shield and protector since He is the only one who can defend and shield His people.
When he was on the verge of giving up, David recognized that his only source of hope was in God, in Whom we glory, since His assurances of protection will never fail. He is a faithful and loving God who will never let His people down. He is the only one who is worthy of our praise and adoration.
When David set his eyes on the Lord, this "man after God's own heart." could confidently declare, "I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the Lord sustained me. I will not be afraid of ten thousand of people Who have set themselves against me all around." Psalm 3:5-6
Like David, we inhabit a fallen, sinful world that is getting bleaker by the day. But like David, we must place all of our confidence in Christ, our Saviour, who is the only one who can be our defence and protector. He alone is our defence and defender.
Why then invest time and effort in threats that never materialize? Worry and anxiety can be beneficial if they alert us to looming issues and encourage us to look for solutions. When it acts as an alarm, the concern may be helpful. Fear becomes a problem when it becomes a broken alarm that won't go off.
Those who have trusted Christ as Saviour have received the Holy Spirit. By grace through faith in Christ, He has brought our adoption into sonship. Through Him, we are able to cry: Abba, Father - as we boldly approach the throne of grace, for mercy to find help in time of need. We have faith in the promises of God's word when we look to Jesus and when our hearts are firmly focused on Him because His word is true. His promises endure forever and ever - great is His faithfulness.
We have the indwelling Holy Spirit of wisdom and understanding, not the spirit of fear but power, love, and a sound mind. We have access to God's Spirit of wisdom, comfort, power, and might. The Holy Spirit of knowledge and understanding resides inside us. It will lead us into all truth and pour the peace that passes understanding into our hearts.
Jesus said, "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid" John 14:27. Keep your heart from becoming anxious or upset. "For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." So we may boldly say:
"The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?" - Hebrews 13:5-6
