Proverbs
4:25-27

Let your eyes look straight ahead, And your eyelids look right before you. Ponder the path of your feet, And let all your ways be established.
Do not turn to the right or the left; Remove your foot from evil.

Focus on your destination

- BsL

The single-minded focus that Proverbs 4:25–27 describes is precisely what we need in our lives. Don't walk down the path of the wicked. Stay away from it; in other words, don't even think about it. Do not even take a single step in that direction. Maintain a straight line of sight in front of you. Don't swerve even slightly to the right or left. Finding the right path in life requires focus, as does staying on that path.

Solomon emphasized the importance of focus when instructing his son to ponder the path of his feet. It wasn't enough to look down at his path; he needed to focus on the direction he was going.

Success in life requires constant and deliberate thought. We must consider our decisions and the potential outcomes. To make sure we're on the right path, we need to reevaluate it on a regular basis. The distinction between right and wrong is incredibly thin. Love and hate have a narrow line dividing them. A wafer-thin line separates obedience and disobedience. One step is all it takes to veer off the right path and onto the wrong one. Our "ways will be established" only after careful consideration has been given to where we will put our feet. When dealing with the tendencies of the flesh in a wicked world, going in the right direction is neither accidental nor straightforward.

The need for FOCUS is essential – "turn not to the right hand nor to the left." This portion of the passage is what makes the advice so challenging to follow. In our world, there are many distractions and attractions; it becomes extremely difficult to FOCUS on the path of our feet. Like Peter on the Sea of Galilee, it was near impossible for him to focus on the path to Christ. The turbulent winds in his right hand and the crashing waves in his left hand. Today, on the right hand, there is advertising after advertising of the pleasures of this world. On the left hand, salespeople are selling magnetic products and pleasures. A lack of focus will lead to a departure from the righteous path.

A casual approach to our life's direction will never produce moral success. Success only comes with focus—the younger a person, the greater the need to focus on God's word. The visual assault a young person experiences today; must be thoroughly considered in every step, every decision, and every choice in life to stay on the right path. This takes tremendous mental and spiritual focus. Although we are prone to straying at every turn, let's oppose sin and keep moving forward on the path God has called us to. May God grant us the strength to resist the temptation to sin.

Maintain your focus by keeping your gaze fixed on Christ in the manner of Hebrews 12. Look to Jesus. Maintain your focus on His ways and His words. Don't swerve to the right or left just a little bit. Don't play around with temptation. And don't try to justify a little sin. We might be tempted to think this isn't such a big deal, and then we gradually start swerving our feet to the right or left, whereas Proverbs 4:25-27 tells us not to do it. Keep moving forward on the good path that God has called you to.

"Your actions speak louder than your words," as the saying goes. The first part of Proverbs 4:26 serves as a timely reminder to think before acting. "And let all your ways be established," says the second part of Proverbs 4:26, implying that we should ensure that our actions are set, fixed, acceptable, and even habitual. Our choices should be consistent with our beliefs. The path we choose in life should be one of worship and honour to the Lord.

The fool lives without thinking, walks without meditating, and chooses his path without hesitation. Christians are called to walk circumspectly, looking at every turn! Only through this discipline will we be able to comprehend and apply God's will to their lives. "See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is." (Eph. 5:15-17). It is your responsibility to create straight paths for your feet "and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed." (Heb. 12:13).

People with wisdom avoid letting life happen to them. They take thoughtful, sober action after careful consideration. Their lives are managed and planned. They make wise decisions regarding their objectives and means of achieving them as well as taking an evaluation of the results.

If you're concerned about the path ahead of you being unclear or not knowing which direction God wants you to take, remember these verses:

  • "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." Psalm 119:105

  • "Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, For I lift up my soul to You." Psalm 143:8

  • "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." Proverbs 3:5-6

When in doubt, remember to get into God's Word.
