Genesis
1:3
“Let there be light”;
and
there was light.
- BsL
God's command, "Let there be light," was the first significant act of creation. Because it was created before that heavenly body, the sun, this light was independent of it. The darkness and vacuum mentioned in verse 2 seem to have been pierced through by God's own light. Undoubtedly, God is depicted as light in 1 John 1:5, "God is light and in Him is no darkness at all."
As a result, God's light is more than just physical light; it also serves as a mirror of His radiant nature. The Lord Jesus, who declared, "I am the light of the world," during His time on earth, provided evidence that this light derives from the holiness and purity of who He is. "He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life," John 8. 12. The apostle John also said of the Lord Jesus, "That was the true light which gives light to every man coming into the world," John 1. 9.
Thus, we discern the true light of God is in the Lord Jesus. He is the source of light that makes God visible to our thoughts and hearts. He is the light that breaks through the murkiness of our immorality and disobedience, the darkness of our sin and selfishness. Because of what the Lord accomplished on the cross when He gave His life in atonement for our sins, we are able to experience the light of God in our lives.
According to the apostle Paul, "For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ," 2 Cor. 4. 6. The same light that pierced the terrible darkness at creation also pierces the darkness of sin in a person's heart. The Lord Jesus is the one who sheds that light.
It is a tremendous blessing to live with the gospel's light shining in our life. A significant obligation exists as well, though. "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven" as we are called to be lights, Jesus says to us in Matt. 5. 16.
Christ's light shines through us as his reflection. We are to live a life that pleases the Lord while remaining in constant communion with our Saviour. It will serve as a reflection of His kindness, goodness, and compassion and will aid in spreading the benefit of salvation to others.
