Genesis 1:1
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."
- BsL
The Bible begins with the majestic and powerful statement, "In the beginning God," which emphasizes the source of all life and being, namely God himself. In the first chapter, his name appears 32 times. The first verse goes on to say that God "made the heavens and the earth" and that nothing happens by coincidence, but that everything happens because God created it.
The first two chapters of the scripture emphasize God's work in creation. Yet in the New Testament, we find clear statements to Christ as the Creator "He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made." John 2-3
For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, Colossian 1.16 So the New Testament explicitly links the works of creation with the Lord Jesus.
The fact that God is mentioned for the first time is noteworthy. Although the name Elohim is plural, the verb "created" is single. This is a strong early indication of the Trinity working together. The Godhead's three components, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, were all involved in the creation process. As a result, the Lord Jesus is present from the very beginning of the Bible. This becomes clearer as we progress through the chapter.
Genesis 1.26 says, "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness." It appears that God was speaking of Himself in the plural rather than conferring with the angelic host. This indicates that the Trinity and the Lord Jesus were both involved in the process of creating humanity.
Therefore our Saviour is eternal as the second member of the Trinity. He created this vast universe; what an incredible privilege it is to know such a God and worship Him.
